Recipe Savoury Side Dish

Perfect Tofu Marinade

This tofu marinade is super simple and combines some of the best ingredients out there. Ginger. Garlic. Sesame. Soy sauce. Honey. Salt. So easy and so delicious.

One of the best things about this marinade is that whilst I have detailed it as a tofu marinade, it is so versatile. Pair it with literally any meat, fish, vegetables, or substitute that you can think of. It has the best balance of sweet, savoury, bitter and umami which means it is delicious with pretty much anything. Alternatively, use as a base for a sauce, use in a stir fry or even as a dipping sauce!

Tofu

There are so many ways to cook or flavour tofu. One of the easiest and tastiest methods, is to let it sit in a marinade and then fry it until crispy. I have managed to convince some of my dear friends that tofu can in fact be a delicious option. Even when they were dead set against it. Don’t be afraid to serve this to your meat eating pals.

When it comes to tofu, the cooking method is very important but also you need to consider what type of tofu you choose. For this tofu marinade, I recommend a tofu that is already pressed.

What is pressed Tofu?

So what exactly is pressed tofu? Pressed tofu has already been compressed to remove excess water. This allows it to remain firm, and this vastly improves the texture for frying. Alternatively, you could press the tofu yourself, but this does add quite a bit more time and effort.

Source of Protein

If you are a tofu novice then I suggest trying out some of the pressed tofu products. Tofu is derived from soya and is a great source of protein. It contains a vast range of amino acids that are essential for growth and development.

Tofu also has a high content of isoflavones which are phytoestrogens. I’m not entirely sure what that means but studies show this can help protect against cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and loss of cognitive function to name just a few of the benefits.

ginger, soy sauce, garlic, honey and lemon make the best tofu marinade

I recommend marinating the tofu for at least an hour before frying, ideally for a few hours or even overnight as this will give it the most time to soak up the delicious flavours. For extra crispy tofu, remove excess marinade before frying and then the leftover marinade can be used to drizzle over at the end.
