Arriving in New Zealand

London to Auckland

We made it! We left London Gatwick on the 1st September at 9am and arrived in Auckland on the 3rd September at 5am (local time). That was a long time to be travelling…. I think the total time was 37 hours! Is that how long it takes to get from London to Auckland?? To be honest I think our plane tickets were a bit cheaper which was why it took so long.

My first long haul flight

Before this trip, the longest plane journey I had been on was about 3 hours. The first plane was 6.5hrs long! This was followed by approximately 7 hours in Doha airport. It is a nice airport but 7 hours was a long time to stay entertained!

My new longest plane journey was quickly beaten by a 13 hour flight from Doha to Adelaide. Not going to lie, that was a struggle. When we arrived in Adelaide, we had just about enough time to get off the plane and go through security before getting back on the plane. We were hoping to have a small nap at the airport but there was no time and before we knew it, we were back on the plane and heading straight for Auckland for the final 4 hour flight.

Still looking excited on our flight

We arrived in Auckland finally after 3 flights and many hours in multiple airports. I imagined we would arrive in Auckland and be so tired from the travelling that we would want to sleep all day. IN FACT, we were so buzzing from finally actually being in New Zealand that we managed to walk over 24,000 steps whilst exploring.

What about Jetlag?

Whilst we did manage to explore a lot of Auckland, once it hit 2pm, we started crashing and we crashed hard when the jet lag finally caught up to us. We ended up sleeping from 4pm all the way to 6am the next morning.

It took us quite a few more days to get our sleeping routine sorted as we kept getting quite sleepy in the evening and waking up early in the mornings but nothing major.

So…Is New Zealand worth the travel time?

Absolutely. 100% yes. I would do it again in a heartbeat for this country and I’ve only been here 10 days so far.

Please keep an eye out for further blog posts on our travels, I will try and post as often as I can.
